Activities Parents Can Do at Home to Support Your Baby’s Development

Your baby’s first year is a time of incredible growth and change, and you can play an important role in supporting their development through everyday activities. Here are some simple, fun, and engaging ways to help your baby reach their developmental milestones:

  • Language and Communication Skills: Even though your baby isn’t talking yet, you can still support their language development by talking to them. Describe what you’re doing and sing simple songs to help your baby start to recognize the rhythm and patterns of language.
  • Cognitive Skills: Help your baby develop their visual tracking skills by moving a toy slowly from side to side and watching them follow it with their eyes. As they get a bit older, you can introduce the idea of cause-and-effect with simple activities like shaking a rattle or playing peek-a-boo. This helps them understand that actions can cause things to happen.
  • Social and Emotional Skills: As your baby grows, you can start playing simple games like peek-a-boo or making faces to encourage social engagement and make them laugh. These interactions lay the groundwork for healthy social development and emotional regulation.
  • Movement and Physical Skills: Tummy time is essential for building the muscles your baby needs for rolling, crawling, and eventually walking. Place your baby on their stomach for a few minutes each day while they are awake, and gradually increase the time as they grow stronger. You can make tummy time more fun by lying down face-to-face with them or placing toys just out of reach to encourage reaching and pushing up.
  • Feeding Skills: If your baby is ready for solid foods, offer soft, mashed foods like pureed fruits and vegetables. Let them experiment with different textures and flavors to encourage sensory development. You can also let them try to hold their own bottle or sippy cup, and let them feed themselves with a small spoon or their hands.
